Large 8vo. 9.75 x 7.75 inches. vi + 500 pp. Bound in original light blue cloth, gilt, boards with silver gilt borders enclosing decorated pictorial panel blocked in silver gilt. Binder's label of Wyman and Sons. Bevelled board edges. All page edges gilt. Patterned endpapers. Some wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine, but otherwise a very good copy with a fine clean interior. Illustrated by 12 engraved plates, protected by tissue guards, including frontispiece. Decorated by vignette half title and endpiece and by head and tailpiece vignettes, initials and by publisher's device on verso of title. A long epic poem on the military career of Gustavus Adolphus (1594-1632), of the House of Vasa, King of Sweden from 1611. A renowned war leader he was at the forefront of Sweden's rise as a great European power, with her involvement in the Thirty Years War. He fell in battle at Lutzen in 1632. This is the author's best known work and the only title to be recently reprinted; his other published verses included sonnets on such diverse subjects as Trafalgar Day, Income Tax, The Hague Conference and Our England, a diatribe against the project of a Channel Tunnel.
