[First Series], xi + [l] + 313 pp. + [1] pp. Half title, Maxims and Hints; Second Series, xi + [i] + 321 pp. + [i] pp. Half bound in original green morocco, gilt, over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt. Marbled endpapers. Slight wear to extremities and occasional foxing. Front hinge [of First Series] starting to crack, but otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by engraved plate [First Series] and by folding facsimile frontispiece from Gilbert White Journal and engravings in text (Second Series). Decorated by title page vignette [First Series]. Observations on animal and bird behaviour, angling, trees and the London parks. The Second Series contains then unpublished extracts from Gilbert White's Journals (which were not published in full until Richard Mabey's edition of 1986-88). Edward Jesse (1786-1868) was a a government clerk from 1798 and held various minor offices until he retired as surveyor of the royal parks and palaces. His edition of the Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White, was published, 1851.
