About this Item
1/300. Small folios. Vol.1: 42 unpaginated single sided leaves. Vol.2: 46 unpaginated single-sided leaves. Olive-colored silk covered portfolio, with wood clasps, and black lettering over a white label on the front cover. The portfolio houses 2 leporello volumes in screen-printed orange paper-covered boards with gold over-printing and decorative floral and figurative motifs, each with black lettering on the front cover. Illustrated silver-stamped endpapers. The work is a visual survey of specialty bags (from special fabrics) housing tea powder jars or kettles, for use in the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. Each set was traditionally passed down through the generations of a significant family and was housed in a distinguishing brocade (woven cloth) bag of unique design. The bags range in time from the late Muromachi - the Edo Period, and feature patterns influenced by Chinese, Southeast Asian, India and Persian styles. The designs of these various bags are shown through a series of color plates of photographic reproductions pasted on to lustrous heavy stock paper. The plates each feature two designs, side by side, for a total of 150 designs between the two volumes. Each image is accompanied by a descriptive caption underneath, in Japanese. There is a detailed list of the plates at the front of each volume. The preface is written by Sen Soshu, the the then headmaster of Musha no Kojisenke school of the Japanese tea ceremony. Text in Japanese. Portfolio with rubbing to extremities, as well as some cracking and/or loosening along some of the hinges. Right flap of portfolio detached but present. One of the wood clasps on the portfolio is missing. Interior of the portfolio with some light smudges. Bindings with some light rubbing to the corners. Interiors with loosening of the front endpaper of vol.1 from the boards. Some minor to light creasing and rippling to some pages. Plates mostly unaffected. Portfolio in fair, binding and interiors in in very good- condition overall. Seller Inventory # 41248
