About this Item
Gardner, John Tudor. Attractive leather-bound friendship / autograph album with a folk-art floral painting on the cover, ?Presented to J. Tudor Gardner by His Mother / Christmas 1887?, containing 70 filled pages of autographs and sentiments from family and friends in Pennsylvania and Kansas, addressed to Tudor dating between 1887 and 1889. Leather-bound with ribbed spine and decorative gilt border on the front cover; folk-art painting of a basket of flowers painted on the front cover; gilt edged pages; presentation inscription on first page. Album measures 7 x 4.25 inches. Front leather cover is scuffed around the border. VG+ condition. [18-1507] Internal evidence, including the signings of his parents, grandparents, cousin, aunt and uncle, and siblings indicates that J. Tudor Gardner was John Tudor Gardner (1865-1953), originally from York Springs, Pennsylvania. His parents were Frank Gardner (1839-1876) and Sarah [Tudor] Gardner (1843-1927) of York Springs. Four of his siblings signed the album: Charles W. Gardner (1871-1942), a prominent fruit grower and Republican politician; Howard M. Gardner (1873-1959); Marsden H. Gardner; and Mae Elizabeth Gardner (1863-1954). Most of the sentiments and autographs from 1887 were from family and friends in York Springs, PA. In 1888 and 1889, the signings were from people in various Kansas communities and cities, including Vine Creek (Ottowa County), Manchester, Abilene, and Delphos. John Tudor Gardner is mentioned in J. M. Waterman?s Delphos in 1890: ?Tudor & Co. general merchandise? They handle dry goods, groceries, clothing, notions, boots and shoes. I. F. Tudor and John Tudor Garder manage the business.? After Kansas, it appears that he worked for the railroad as the mention of his death in Oakland, California in 1953 referred to him as a retired railroader. The expressed sentiments drip with late Victorian sentiment and rhyme which provide an interesting collection of signed, and mostly dated, expressions of friendship, love and support.
