About this Item

Canada's first feminist literary journal, featuring contributions from leading North American Icelandic writers including Stephan G. Stephansson, Sigurdur Julius Johannsson, etc. as well as Canadian feminist leader Nellie McClung. We have 9 of 12 annual volumes comprising some 108 monthly issues (some issues are combined). Single issues average 20-30 pages; double issues twice that number of pages. 22 X 15 cm. in size. Icelandic Canadian scholar Wilhelm Kristjanson in his book, The Icelandic People of Manitoba (p. 373), states that "Freya is to be rated a literary magazine as well as a woman sufrage journal. Featured were serial stories, biographical sketches of prominent people . . .,; poetry of a high order, including poems by Stephan G. Stephansson, Kiristinn Stefansson, Sig. Jul. Johannesson, Th. Th. Thorsteinsson and Magnus Markusson, literary reviews and a childrens' corner". Includes occasional contemporary advertisements as well. This is an early publication in the new world Icelandic canon and so rare as to be almost unobtainable. We have in this set: Years/Vols [árg.] III-XI (i.e. 3-11). Each cited volume is complete and the set is inclusive of 108 of an estimated 144 issues. All issues are bound in four hardcover volumes, and all issues are Very Good or better in condition, with small exceptions, being a closed tear, chip, and loss of a few words of text to the first leaf of vol. IX, No. 1; also spines are wanting on two hardcover volumes, plus loose covers on one such volume. Considerable errors to numbering system in the original, corrected in pencil, based on a comparison against the records held in Iceland. Hjartar, in his bibliography, Vesturheimsprent, points out that this journal was published from 1898/99-1909/10). Stefan Jonasson, editor of Logberg-Heimskringla, an Icelandic Canadian newspaper, had this to say of the journal Freyja in his 2016 article: "Margrét and her husband Sigfús launched the periodical Freyja in 1898, which was produced on a small printing press located in their home at Selkirk, Manitoba. Freyja billed itself as 'the only women's suffrage paper published in Canada.' Eventually growing in size from eight pages to a forty-page monthly, Freyja was both a highly-regarded literary magazine and an organ for the women's movement, containing short stories and poetry, biographical sketches and book reviews, critical essays and even a children's corner . . .".
