About this Item
An original First World War poem, apparently unpublished, written in the 1920s by the Mills and Boon novelist Margaret Muriel Price and inspired by the example of 'In Flanders Fields'. The poem runs to three stanzas and though conventional in its emblematic use of of the Flanders poppies, remains starkly appropriate to its subject matter, concluding with 'the numberless feet of the Slain, Comes echoing back in the voice of the Dead, "Was it in vain?"' Signed in type 'M.M.P.' Price was a cross-dresser who also went under the name of 'Peter' and the poem is accompanied by a posed, signed photograph of a Tommy, inscribed to her/him.
