Decorative dark red cloth boards (with tooled pattern design) with similarly decorative spine; with gilt titles. There is general shelf-wear with some slight bending at the corners. The head and tail of the spine has some scuffing and there is a tear (closed: <50 mm) at the joint with the rear board. Top edge is dark stained. B/w illustrations and designs, both within text and whole-page, feature throughout: '35 Illustrations Drawn and Engraved Under the Direction of the Author.' The pages are generally moderately tanned; with the discolouration more noticeable on the preliminary and final pages - for example on the frontispiece's tissue guard (image). Ffep has ink signature, dated July, 1881 and a few pencil markings opposite. pp. x, 192 + 29 pages of the publisher's portfolio. Black stained endpapers. Third edition.
