Octavo. original black cloth, lettered in gilt. With presentation inscription by the "American Agent Jackson H. Ralston". The account of the dispute dating to 1767 when the Spanish crown took possession of church property in Upper California. Later President Santa Ana sold the property in 1842, ordered the proceeds put into the national treasury [of Mexico] and promised the church 6% on the funds. When Upper California became part of the United States, Mexico stopped the payments. In 1902 the dispute was brought up at the International Court in the Hague which ruled in favour of the United States. Jackson H. Ralston was the agent and counsel for the United States. Spine a little faded, ink inscriptions on front free endpaper and fly leaf, bookplate on front paste-down, else fine. Bookseller Inventory # 1956
