1909 Longmans Green, NY, 1st edition, 8vo, pp xv, 263, photogravure frontis w/ tissue guard, 23 photogravure plates w/ tissue guards, 4 folding panoramas, 47 bw photos, 2 color folding maps, teg, uncut, dark blue cloth; cloth spine separated from backstrip, corners rubbed, front hinge taped, AAC/William S. Ladd bookplate, good. Mumm was a London publisher who liked to travel and climb. He was with Freshfield in the Ruwenzori (1905) and on Longstaff s expedition to Trisul (1907). This is the account of the Trisul expedition and, although he did not reach the summit, he did bring along oxygen, the first use for high-altitude climbing. He later made the first ascent of Mumm Peak, in the Canadian Rockies, and became a member of the American Alpine Club. He is most noted for his compilation of the three-volume Alpine Club Register . This book is beautifully illustrated with the smaller photos being pasted in. A classic. Neate 179. Ladd, William S., MD. (1887 1949) AAC Councilor (1923-25), Vice-President (1926-28), President (1929-31), Honorary Member (1949) and member of the Alpine Club of Canada, the Alpine Club, and Club Alpin Francais (honorary). He started climbing at an early age with ascents of Mt. Hood (1904, 1905, 1911) and in the Canadian Rockies (1905). He made the first ascent of Mt. Saskatchewan, Canada, (1923, with Conrad Kain), attempted Mt. Fairweather (1926) and was a member of the first ascent team in 1931, and climbed in the Alps (1928). Ladd oversaw the participation and the founding of the Union International des Associations d Alpinism (UIAA) and gave the gift of the AAC s first clubhouse, an old fire station located on the upper East side of Manhattan. During his term the first American Alpine Journal was published (1929). This book is from the collection of the American Alpine Club Library.
