About this Item
First editions, first printings "published for the Girl Guides Association by Basil Blackwell, Oxford". Rare set of two volumes with wrappers. Both volumes have very neat gift inscriptions to first end papers: "Mary Shepperson from David and Llewellyn, Christmas 1928" and "Mary Shepperson from Auntie Vera, Christmas 1928" in an identical hand of light ink, suggesting that the recipient is the writer. Vol 1 has a Foreword by HRH Princess Mary before she became Queen Mary, with a mounted colour plate; vol 2 has a foreword by HRH the Duchess of York before she became Queen Elizabeth I, also with a mounted colour plate. Both books have original very clean and bright similar decorated bindings, orange and brown for the first and light and dark blue for the second. The heavy end papers and text blocks are very clean and tight with black and white full-page and half-page drawings plus decorated chapter headings. There is almost no spotting to the pages. There is a flap shadow to The Second Trail end papers and one or two more spots than in The First Trail. Dust jackets condition: Both wrappers have similar attractive full-page colour artwork showing a uniformed Guide walking in the country with her staff to the front cover and idyllic country scenes to the verso. There are three short closed tears to the bottom edge of the front cover, and one closed tear to the verso; there is a small loss to the bottom of the spine tip of vol 1 by the publisher's name and scuffs to the top spine tip. The Second Trail has a tiny loss to the very top edge of the front cover that does not affect the illustration; there is a small loss to the top spine tip, not affecting the title letters, and scuffs to the verso. Neither book is priced clipped, but no price is printed on the flaps. Additional postage and insurance cover will be required for these rare and heavy volumes and will be requested following an order. Seller Inventory # PBBBO2005
