"Friedrich Wilhelm Ostwald was a Baltic-German scientist who turned his interest to the fine arts, and in particular to colour theory, after receiving the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1909. As an amateur painter he made his own pigments and paints, and he published a small practical guidebook entitled Malerbriefe in 1904. Ostwald published his first book on colour theory, 'Die Farbenfibel' (The Colour-Primer) in 1916, followed in 1918 by an extended treatise on the same subieet 'Die Harmonie der Rarben' (The Harmony of Colours). Both were small-format and slim volumes that appear simple in design, deceptively like school exercise books but Ostwald's system is complex, combining geometry and maths andÂhas been knownÂto baffle even experts in the field". Alexandra Loske, "Tate: Colour. A Visual History", p. 166. ITA. Seller Inventory # 55 n.1465
