FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.5 x 8 inches. 189 pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, in dust wrapper, which has a few chips at head and tail of spine and a little foxing on the rear, which contains publisher's advertisements. Edges foxed, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 4 pages of black and white plates. Philip Toynbee (1916-81) was a novelist, Communist intellectual and correspondent for The Observer. His father was the historian, Arnold Toynbee, and his daughter, Polly, is the Guardian columnist. This book is a memoir of two of his friends who fell in the Second World War: Jasper Ridley (1913-43) and Esmond Romilly (1918-41), a socialist, who had run away from public school and served in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War.
