Title: FORTUNE MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, ...
Publisher: Time, Inc.
Publication Date: 1932
Illustrator: Photographic and Illustration Plates and Colorful Ads. And With Illustrated Playbill Insert for MGM's GRAND HOTEL Still Present
Book Condition: Very Good
Four early issues of this classic early pictorial magazine bound together, with the original covers bound in as the four endpapers. Covers were of heavy paper, so they are still nicely preserved. A nice collection of issues that is highlighted by the December spread on Hollywood and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. A delightful issue, and this volume still contains a 4-page insert promoting the new MGM picture Grand Hotel. This insert is 12" by 9" and has a playbill in color on its cover with illustration of Joan Crawford at the left side raising her skirt to show a leg and garter. In center is an illustration of a kissing scene between Greta Garbo and John Barrymore, and to the right are representations of Wallace Beery and Lionel Barrymore. All shown as stars at top of the playbill, led off by Garbo and Barrymore. Title Grand Hotel in green vertically between the illustrations as if they are encased in spotlights. The remaining three pages of the insert promote the studio and its stars. Great color throughout, and back cover shows hand holding cocktail glass with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures Star Power printed on it. Backdrop in color is a profusion of floating liquor bottle labels. Insert in fine condition and still stuck onto the edge of page 59 of the December issue. A remarkable survivor. The article on MGM includes has two color illustrations by C. Czermanski, including a great full-page one picturing C.B. De Mille on the set of a gladiator movie. The b&w photos in the article include stills from movies and a large horizontal one of the Irving Thalberg wedding party. Shown from left to right, per caption: Crowdin, D. Shearer, Davies, N. Shearer, I. Thalberg, S. Thalberg, Mayer, Selznick, Goetz and Vidor. The other three issues of Fortune in this volume with great content and ads as well, and the back endpaper preserves the classic cover of Ernest Hamlin Baker of scenes from Wall Street at Christmas time jumbled together with the head of Santa Claus at the center. Contents of all the issues clean and complete including their back covers and the front covers as endpapers. This was the standard format for binding four issues together at Fortune headquarters. Cloth a bit scuffed. Page one of first issue pulling slightly at gutter, but still firmly secured, and binding of the volume is tight and fully serviceable. September cover with some soiling at bottom right. A big, heavy volume, so extra shipping charges will apply if other than media mail within U.S. Bookseller Inventory # 955
