About this Item
Large 10 x 13 inches, hand coloured lithographic view. A very good example. Framed and glazed in acid free mount and backing. This rare, separately published view proudly shows the improvements to Folkestone since the coming of the Railway. It is certainly one of the rarest views of the town. Viewed from the sea the artist looks across the now thriving harbour with it's new station buildings and Harbour House and the luxurious Pavilion Hotel. The new Customs House on the South Quay is not extant, this was erected in 1854. The fine detail shows many individual buildings in Marine Parade area including the town's first Gas works on the land below the Road of Remembrance. Above is the Parish Church and the Bayle, with the beginning of the erection of villas on the lower Leas. The importance of the railway is shown by a train crossing the recently completed viaduct signalling a new fashionable confidence and prosperity for the town and Harbour. KENT FOLKESTONE KENT.
