About this Item

Most glaring problem a fading of the green cloth to a much lighter shade of olive green at right edge to near center of the front cover. Looks like it is probably related to prolonged reaction with sunlight to that portion of the cover. Spine cloth intact. Fading to the gilt of the title and the design of a vine on the spine, but still easy to make it out. Small wear spot on this design also. Small tear to headband not serious. Book still tight in the binding with solid hinges. Mostly clean internally, although pages 52 to 214 are affected by a small dampstain at lower outside edge of pages affecting the blank margin only. Preliminary pages including title page with foxing. Only sporadic age spots in book after that. Frontispiece portrait of Harriet Beecher Stowe is still tissue protected but it did not prevent the foxing, which is moderately heavy. Still, it is an interesting portrait, and oppostive this frontispiece is the lovely engraved title page with design of a vine with flowers encircling the title. Following is the printed title page showing that this was the fourteenth thousand published in 1858. Name in old pen on first blank flyleaf showing that this book wound up in early San Francisco. Tales of New England and miscellaneous content including poetry by the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Bookseller Inventory # 1595
