This original almanack for 1818 (printed at end of 1817), although lacking its front and back covers, contains a long extract from Capt. James Riley's narrative of the wreck of the U.S. ship Commerce and the harrowing experience of its crew as they became slaves of North African native tribesmen. This extract is 12 full pages in length printed in rather small type typical of almanack's of the period. This abridgement published same year as the first book length account of the famous incdient, which so impressed a young Abraham Lincoln, it is reported that he rated it one of the six most influential books of his youth. Although lacking its covers and thus four of the original 36 pages are lacking, an old time collector inserted a slip of paper identifying it as being the Farmers' Calendar, or Uitica Almanack. Aside from the missing content, the condition of the pages is very good though age browned, and they are tightly bound in. Early American imprints. Second series ; no. 40800. Small Octavo, 32pp. Bookseller Inventory # 2615
