L Abbe Hauy, De l Academie Royal des Sciences, Professeur Emirates de L Universite, Chez la Veuve Desaint, A Paris, 1787, 235 pp plus four plates, full original leather, 8 x 5.25 , 8vo. In fair condition. Binding moderately worn with scuffing to extremities. Corners rubbed to cardboard. Joints quite tender, cracked and flaking. Top and bottom compartments of spine are lacking with binding exposed. Poor. Rear board afflicted with peeling and red rot. Ex-library plate of The Caldwell Collection of Knox College. Edward Caldwell (1861-1949), editor and president of McGraw-Hill, was an enthusiastic collector of rare maps and books. Old hand marginalia on second fly. All edges green. Light toning throughout textblock with minor instances of foxing. Folding plates in good working order, plate one afflicted with age staining, darkened. Binding intact. Please see photos. Haüy (1743-1822), the distinguished crystallographer, also did important work in physics. "In 1787 he published Exposition raisonnée? In contrast with Aepinus, he refrained from mathematical calculations and added Coulomb's recent results. Like Franklin and Aepinus, Haüy assumed one hypothetical electric fluid and one magnetic fluid, although in his later works he adhered to the two-fluid theory."-D.S.B., VI, p. 178.
