Book Description Broschiert. Virch. Arch. path. Anat., 27./29. - Berlin, Verlag von Georg Reimer, 1864, 8°, (2), 286 pp., orig. Broschur; unaufgeschnittenes frisches Exemplar. - FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Among the earliest studies of the coronary circulation to employ methods of physiological measurement, Panum's experiments confirmed Erichsen's conclusion that any disease, such as hardening of the coronary arteries, that interferes with the flow of the blood through them may result in sudden death. He embolized the coronary arteries and aorta of dogs by means injection of powder, wax, oil and India ink, finding gradual cessation of cardiac action. -- He replaced practically the entire blood of a dog and found no change in behavior of the animal. He pointed out the dangers implied in direct transfusion of non-defibrinated blood and in transfusion from one species to another. He found the transfusion of defibrinated blood within the same species to be relatively safe. -- Panum, who had trained under Virchow and Claude Bernard, was the founder of modern Danish physiology. He opened the first Danish physiology laboratory in Copenhagen in 1864. - See Leibowitz, Hist. of Cor.
