About this Item
1968. First UK edition limited to 750 copies. 80pp. Stephen Jonas (1921-1970) was an influential if underground figure of the New American Poetry. A gay African-American poet of self-obscured origins, he was heavily influenced by Ezra Pound and Charles Olson and was a pioneer of the serial poem and a mentor to such acknowledged masters as Jack Spicer and John Wieners. His poetry uses phonetic spellings, rhythmic phrasing, and composition by field techniques to transcribe both the langauge and experience of the street as well as aesthetics. The book is bound in the original card covers with black titling and an illustration (of an ear?) on the front cover. The book is in excellent condition with light shelf wear on the cover and the contents are tight and clean with a small name label on the inside of the front cover (that of the Durham poet David Burnett).
