About this Item
A hand colored woodcut with blue added, depicting the meeting of Pyramus and Thisbe in the woods. Based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. Text in French. Measures 14.5 inches wide by 11.5 inches high. In the woodcut Thisbe is stabbing herself with a sword after finding Pyramus dead. Her veil lies on the ground between them. In the background is a lion. Both Pyramus and Thisbe are in contemporary 18th century dress. French text of the story of Pyramus and Thisbe surrounds the woodcut. Printed in seven columns. Cheap, colored woodcuts were highly popular in Europe from the 15th to the 19th century. They were very popular because of their low cost, bright colors, and their political, religious or literary illustrations. Because of their popularity few survive today. Previously folded, some staining on verso. Water stain and slight tear on lower margin. Does not affect text or print. Hand-colored in blue (stencil) woodcut with letterpress. With letterpress title, and publication line: "A Chartres, chez Garnier-Allabre, Fabricant d'images et marchand de Papiers Peints, place des Halles, no. 389." Not in Garnier-Pelle Nicole; Préaud, Maxime, L'Imagerie populaire française, Paris, Réunion des musées nationaux and Bibliothèque nationale de France, 1990. Seller Inventory # 000081
