About this title
Tan Letter which is here reprinted, as connected mth the preceding Essay, was occasioned by a speech delivered in the House of Commons by the Member for Norwich, Mr. William Smith, the part of which in question is thus reported in the Parliamentary Debates :- â The honourable member then adverted to that â tergiversation of principle which the cancer of â individuals so often presented. He was âiariivom supposing, that a man whoset out in â lilie with the profession of oentain sentiments, was â bound to conclude life with them. He thought â there might be many occasions in which a â change of opinion, when that change was unatâ tended by any personal advantages, when it apâ peared entirely disifntemested, might be the result â of sincere conviction. But what he most deâ tested, what most filled him with disgust, was â the settled, determined malignity of a renegado. â He had read in a. pubhcation (T he Quarterly â Review), certainly entitled to much respect from â its general literary excellences, though he difâ fered from it in its principles, a passage alluding â to the ment disturbances, which passage was â as follows :â â? When the man -of tree opinions commences â professor of moral and political philosophy for â- the heaeht of the public. the fables of old creâ duality are then verified. .
