Disbound. A scarce original copy published during the lifetime of Rev. Samuel West. Essays on Liberty and Necessity; in which the true nature of liberty is stated and defended; and The principal Arguments used by Mr. Edwards and others, for Necessity, are considered. by Samuel West, A.M. Pastor of the Church of Christ in New Bedford.Boston: Printed by Samuel Hall, in Cornhill, MDCCXCIII (1793).This very fragile copy is in the state in which I purchased it. There is no cover though on the spine there appears to be possible remnants of a binding. One page (see photo) is torn across in the lower half, the complete page is present. Pages are sewn with all attached, though some only held together at one end or the other. There are no added markings or notations other than the name on the title page, which is difficult to make out. Foxing, Browning. 7 x 4.5 inches, 18 cm. 54 pages. A scarce original copy published during the lifetime of Rev. Samuel West. The content is an advertisement, an introduction and three essays. The Samuel West (1731-1807) essays are in response to Jonathan Edwards, who in his prolific writing did a great deal to define the doctrines of John Calvin for the American Christian denominations who claim election and double predestination as truth, as opposed to those Christians whose soteriological theology is named for the teachings of Jacobus Arminius which allows for the free will of man to choose or reject Christ?s invitation. ADVERTISEMENT.The substance of the following sheets was penned about twenty years ago. In reading Mr. Edwards on the Freedom of the Will, several observations occurred to the author, which he communicated, in conversation, to some of his friends. They were pleased to say, that they thought them pertinent and just: And they requested the author to pay more attention to the subject, with the idea of his publishing strictures upon the whole book. Remarks were made upon different parts of it; but nothing was prepared for publication: The author supposed the public were too much interested in disputes of a political nature to attend to the subject. A young Gentleman, who lived with the author a few years since, copied several letters and detached pieces, which had been written many years before. Several gentlemen perused the manuscript. At their desire, some alteration being made in the arrangement of the observations, and some new remarks being added, it is submitted to the public eye. Bookseller Inventory # 009277
