First French edition of An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding. The supplementary 'quatre philosophes' are essays 6-9 of Essays, Moral and Political, volume II of the 1742 edition. Originally published as a stand-alone set (as here) these later became the first two volumes of Schneider's five-volume Oeuvres philosophiques de Mr. D. Hume. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes, small 8vo, half titles, [iv], lxiv, 260, [10]; [iv], 276, [2] pp., contemporary cat's paw calf, rubbed and corners worn, spines attractively gilt with contrasting labels, wear at spine ends with a little loss, marbled endpapers, title-pages with ownership inscription 'De Bacqueville', occasional spotting, a nice set.
