About this Item
FIRST EDITION. Small 8 vo. Contemp. marbled wrappers. Uncut. xx, (4), 227, (1) pp. Engraved frontispiece + 4 folding engraved plates. Some of backstrip is missing exposing cords; still, internally a very good copy, uncut in its original state. Abbe Nollet's (1700-70) theory of the cause of electricity is first presented in book form in the present treatise. "Nollet's work. was originally published at Paris in 1746. He was the first to observe that pointed bodies electrified give out streams of light. He also found that glass and other non-conductors are more strongly excited in air than in vacuo; that the electric spark is more diffuse and unbroken in vacuo; and that an excited tube loses none of its electricity by being placed in the focus of a concave mirror when the sunlight is therein concentrated." (Mottelay, pp.181-182). A fifth edition appeared at Paris in 1771. Wheeler Gift Cat. 329. Gartrell 396. Ronalds, p.370. Bakken, p.92 with facsimile of frontispiece. Ekelöf Cat. 246.
