Early printing of Cobb's Spelling Book, with a woodcut and description of the Australian emu: "The emu is a native of New Holland, and is, with the sole exception of the ostrich, the largest bird known to exist. . It is sometimes hunted by the colonists as an article of food; and, its flesh is stated to have much of the flavor of beef" (p161). Also with Frontispiece woodcut engraving of boys playing baseball. This is an early depiction of baseball in America: Abner Doubleday invented the game in Cooperstown, New York, during the summer of 1839. 12mo, 168pp. Bound in the original plain blue paper covered boards and new backstrip, new end papers, a bit of light scattered foxing.
