2000-2004, 21×14,8 cm. Softcover. Unpaginated. Complete run of 8 exhibition catalogues. An Empty Space was an ambitious, long term, zen infused project by Akira Ikeda gallery. It s mission statement reads An Empty Space is a ten-year exhibition [January 1, 2000 June 30, 2010] divided into a series of twenty shows. Each exhibition is presented by a single artist exhibiting one work at Akira Ikeda Gallery/New York for a period of six months. An empty space suggests that content determines the state and the quality of a space, not physical boundaries and dimensions. Up to Nr.8 the catalogues are bilingual English; Japanese and include lengthy essays along with the occasional artist writing. Kawara s number (9) although technically a catalogue it can be easily classified as a poetic artist s book combining minimal photographic documentation and an enigmatic unsigned text excerpt from Beelzebub s Tales to His Grandson by Gurdjieff, which is only identified in the colophon. Contrary to the rest this was an English only edition.
