Fiona Valpy woonde zeven jaar in Frankrijk waar ze samen met haar man een bouwvallige schuur omtoverde tot een paleisje. Daar ontdekt ze haar liefde voor cement mengen, interieurdesign en wijnproeven. Al deze ervaringen en haar liefde voor het land en de Fransen zelf dienden als inspiratie voor de boeken die ze er schreef. Inmiddels woont Fiona in Schotland en bezoekt ze Frankrijk nog regelmatig.
