About this Item

FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Contemp. cloth. viii, 177 pp. Text figs. PRESENTATION COPY to the distinguished German mathematician, Richard Dedekind (1831-1916), who made far-reaching contributions to number theory. A close friendship existed between Dedekind and another Heinrich Weber (1842-1913), the mathematician. A fine three-line inscription is on the front free endpaper. A nearly fine copy. Heinrich Friedrich Weber (1839-1928) was early in his career assistant to G. Wiedemann and Helmholtz before becoming professor of physics in Hohenheim and then at the Zürich Polytechnic (1875). It was in those years that he conducted experiments on the temperature dependence of specific heats for a number of elements (see: Partington IV.201). At the time of the present book, Weber was professor at the Herzoglich Technischen Hochschule in Braunschweig. Ekelöf Cat. 1496. Sotheran/Zeitlinger, 2nd suppl., no. 6506.
