Description:

Two volumes Octavo. original white cloth lettered in gilt, in publisher's slipcase (fine). Illustrated. One of 1100 copies. With Richard H, Dillon's signature in both volumes. "The book met with great success, selling 10,000 copies in America and 30,000 in England within two weeks". (Howes). "A most lively and entertaining record, full of action, of concrete details shrewdly observed and carefully CA dealerselected, and of illuminating comment. Like the first-class reporter that he was, Taylor went to all the interesting places, the gold mines, San Francisco, Monterey, Sacramento and other towns and cities as they were springing up at incredible speed, talked with everyone he could find who could tell him something interesting, and Éhad, himself, most of the experiences of a typical Forty-niner". (Wheat). This work is probably the outstanding book on the early gold rush in California. The author's description of the Constitutional Convention at Monterey is the best we have, as are also the views he gives us of the earliest mining camps. The colored plates are beautifully tinted works of art depicting San Francisco, Monterey, Sacramento, and mining camps. [See BAL 19638. Bradford 5344. Cowan p. 630. Graff 4073. Howes T743. Rader 3037. Sabin 94440. Wheat # 204. Zamorano Eighty, #73]. Bookseller Inventory #
