Later in his youth, he studied at the city's Academy of Fine Arts and elsewhere in Europe and became an accomplished portrait painter, exhibiting in Antwerp and Brussels. Hornyansky then branched into etching and landscape painting and was associated with Belgian's School of Hens before travelling to England, where he received several portrait commissions. He then travelled to Paris to study aquatint printmaking before emigrating to Canada in 1929. Hornyansky's figure painting attracted attention in Toronto, and he exhibited regularly with the Royal Canadian Academy and the Ontario Society of Artists, and also taught metal plate media at the Ontario College of Arts from 1945 to 1958. Hornyansky s work has been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally and he is recognized today for having made major contributions to the advancement of printmaking in Canada.
