Newspaper is just a few weeks post-Stonewall Riots and contains stories and profiles on art, human interest pieces, and local happenings in Greenwich Villages. Notably, the paper includes a 4" x 4" advertisement on page 45 for the Gay Power March, organized by the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis, two prominent gay activism groups in the 1960s. The Gay Power March, which took place on July 27th, 1969, marked the transition from the "Homophile Movement", a politically cautious campaign for social acceptance, to the "Gay Liberation Movement", a more radical and urgent ideology spurred by the Stonewall Riots. The July 27th Gay Power March commemorated the Riots, and is thus considered the first Pride Parade in the country after Stonewall. The march is also considered one of the first major actions taken by the Gay Liberation Front, a powerful force for change in the early gay liberation era. Taking inspiration from other radical activist groups like the Black Panthers, the GLF denounced police violence and advocated for systemic change including the removal of homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders. Also included in this issue are aone of the earliest articles on "computer dating" in the LGBTQ community as well as a long article on the Biafra refugees. An iconic newspaper covering LGBTQ activism in New York in the late 1960s. Three pages exhibit flat tears with no loss to text.
