Title: EXPLORING OTHER WORLDS **Gene Roddenberry's ...

Publisher: Collier Books, New York, 1963

Publication Date: 1963

Book Condition: Fair

Edition: 1st Edition

An iconic copy of this paperback from the early 1960's that has an interplanetary spaceship illustrated on the front cover. This was Gene Roddenberry's copy as evidenced by his embossed stamp that is found at several places in the book. Name on embossed stamp is E.W. Roddenberry and shows a Beverly Glen address in Los Angeles. Gene Roddenberry was of course short for Eugene W. Roddenberry. This copy not an ideal copy of the book but it is THE COPY owned by Mr. Roddenberry who created the Star Trek series for television and later also for several motion pictures. The illustration on cover couldn't be much closer to the image seen at the beginning of Star Trek episodes which has the Starship Enterprise speeding towards an outer space destination. Roddenberry's embossed stamp can be found on first blank flyleaf, first page of introduction, at least two pages of text and on the final page at bottom margin. Unfortunately someone, possibly Roddenberry himself, tore off part of the stamp on last page and took part of a line of text with it. There is also a corner torn off the title page at upper right where presumably there was also an embossed stamp or something else Roddenberry or someone else did not want to stay with the book Since embossings do not stand out like bookplates or writing in name of owner, it seems likely the aim was to tear off all ownership detail but the person doing the tearing off missed the embossed name and address on front endpaper and the ones that were applied on top of text. There are at least four embossed stamps remaining and part of a fifth on the last page. The stampings on pages of text blend in to varying degrees with the printed text, but the stamping on front endpaper is easily readable in full. Another condition issue is wear to right edge of front cover resulting in small edge loss to front cover and some pages of the book near beginning, but not affecting the front cover illustration or any text. This paperback came out in 1963 when Roddenberry was planning the Star Trek series. It is interesting to speculate what contents of this paperback, which is an anthology of several science fiction space short stories, might have influenced Roddenberry as he envisioned the series. It is perhaps worthy of note that one of the stories in the book features a planet called Vulcan (where Spock is from according to the tv series.) This story titled "At The Center Of Gravity" is by Ross Rocklynne. Perhaps most interesting is text from the beginning of the last short story in the book, by Sam Moskowitz, titled "Man Of The Stars." First sentence reads, "Thousands of men have spun a trail of daring adventure and pioneering in the spaceways." And later is the phrase, "Pioneers who blasted open the greatest frontier of them all." Is it too much to think that these lines influenced the writing of the opening lines of each episode of Star Trek spoken by William Shatner? In any event, this paperpack is obviously no mere paperback but is instead a valuable relic of a television legend. Size: Octavo, 256pp. Bookseller Inventory # 2658
