A little wear to extremities, including at head of spine and front hinge starting to crack; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by frontispiece and whole page drawings in text. Decorated by red borders to frontispiece and title page. The first edition for Macmillan with illustrations by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), Irish born artist famous for his pen and ink illustrations of the classics, appeared in 1896. It was originally published in Macmillan Illustrated Classics series in 1900. Edited by Arthur Doubloon (1840-1921), poet, essayist and biographer.
