About this Item
1892. Second edition. [v], 100pp. Mrs. De Salis (Harriet Anne Bainbridge, 1829-1908), was a prolific British author, writing over 20 books, mostly concerned with cookery and household management. She is probably best known for her "A La Mode" series of small books various aspects of cooking and cookery. The series is now very collectable, and the volume on Drinks is one of the scarcest. It includes sections on cups, punches, American cocktails, hot drinks, syrups, invalid drinks, wines and spirits, and an appendix on the management of the beer cellar. The book is bound in the original paper covered boards with a brown cloth spine and brown titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and some patchy damp fading on the cloth of the spine together with two small stains. There is some scraping to the paper covering the front board, just above the title, which has caused a little damage. There is some wear to the paper on the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with light browning to the endpapers. There are some pencil written notes and a newspaper article from 1916 pasted onto the blank page 96, and some small pencil notes on index pages 98 and 99. There are also small stains on the fore margin of the index pages at the end of the book and two recipes from old newspapers have been attached to the back of the rear free endpaper with the edge of the sticky paper from a sheet of stamps. There is no inscription. Seller Inventory # VIDrink03
