About this title

Synopsis:

A canary's owner imagines all the adventures the bird would have if he were set free from his cage.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-3-- In this book a fragile story becomes the vehicle for a lavish display of watercolor technique and design. A boy, hearing his canary sing, drifts into an early morning dream in which he frees his pet, letting it fly out the window. The bird first encounters crows, then joins a flock of wild canaries for a chase along a river. When a hawk threatens, the wild birds disappear among the leaves, but the golden bird is easy prey. As the hawk's talons seize the helpless bird, the boy awakens and finds his pet safe in the cage while the wild canaries sing outside. Despite a rather commercial self-consciousness, the book is beautifully designed. The lush color figures are patterned and defined by lines of white in a batik-style technique. These figures are combined with softer fields of color flowing into expanses of white, giving the whole work strong visual impact. However, the illustrations overwhelm the text which, while poetically written, lacks substance. A similar book with a more complete story is Keeping's Charley, Charlotte and the Golden Canary (Watts, 1968; o.p.) --Eleanor K. MacDonald, Beverly Hills Public Library
