About this title

"The terpsichorean dinosaurs in this collection of whimsical poems allemande left and pirouette in high style . . . Degen's detailed drawings brim with fun . . ."--Publishers Weekly. Full-color illustrations.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 4--Dinosaur Dances sound like fun, but it's Degen's illustrations that shake a tail feather here, not the rhymes. Yolen's idea of connecting poems and prehistoric prancing is a good one, but the contents of these verses seem more directed toward adults than children. Kids will appreciate some of the sillier sounding rhymes--"When the allosaurus/ Does a rumba/ Does she lumber?/Is she limber?"--and they'll recognize some of the dances and music Yolen describes. But the poems about dress codes, love, and choosing dance partners would be of little interest to young readers, were it not for Degen's boisterous illustrations. His bright colors and energetic style will hold even nonreaders' attention. Often, the humor of the drawings surpasses that of the text; for example, a T. Rex drawn as John Travolta. A smaller complaint is that these dinos reenact some rather tired stereotypes, such as the ugly female wallflower--albeit humorous, it lacks originality. In comparison, the rhymes in Prelutsky's Tyrannosaurus Was a Beast (Greenwillow, 1988) are shorter, less sing-songy, and more fun to read aloud. --Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Pub . Lib .
