1949, Second Edition, First Printing, Hardcover. Tan boards with black title on front board, and title, author and publisher on the binding. Some darkening of binding along with rubbing on both top and bottom. Dustjacket is missing the front and spine, although the inside flap from front is part of the book. The back panel and flap of the dustjacket are still in tact. 572 pages of which 11 are "Index". Pages in good condition. As noted on the dustjacket, this contains all of the deletions that had initially been removed by the original editors-things that they had considered "likely" to offend persons then living, or to outrage Southern sentiment." This book has been and was "at once accepted as among the most valuable source books on life in the South during the war" The author, Mary Boykin Chesnut was the wife of James Chestnut Jr, United States Senator from 1859-1861.
