About this Item
Octavo. Measuring 8.5" x 7". 132pp. Approximately 44,000 words. Diary and scrapbook from the year 1915 with black cloth boards, "Standard, No.356 Diary, 1915," is stamped in gilt on the front cover. Rear board and spine lacking, front board and several pages detached but present, and light tide marks on the bottom of the pages, good with clear handwritten or typed text. A daily diary and scrapbook from 1915 during World War I, filled with written entries and newspaper clippings. Each page has a sentence or two about the author's day but the rest of the page is filled with information about World War I. The information is highly detailed about when, where, and what is going on with the war though at times it is clear that the author was slightly unlettered. Several words lack certain letters and are spelled incorrectly; otherwise the text is easily understandable. The author writes that they have gotten a larger diary to write war news in but remarks that the war will be over soon, "Here's hoping it won't be long before I'll have no war news to write". The author focuses heavily on Russian and Turkish war news, "Russia has sent troops to Mongolia to quell a revolt," but in general, writes down anything to do with the war, either acquired through newspapers, books, or presumably word of mouth. Some of the articles include, "Torpedo Sinks British Cruiser with 190 Men," "Thirty-four Shrapnel Bullets Hit One Soldier," and various other articles about soldiers dying on both sides. Among the maps is one of the location of the "German Western Battle Line," "Position of Every Army in France," "Gulf of Saros," and "Dardanelles Fort". The last page and entry is for May 8th, 1915 as the rest of the book is missing. While a secondary resource, this is a very extensive recount of war news from 1915 by an unknown but enthralled author. Seller Inventory # 414536
