About this Item

INSCRIBED by Molnár in Hungarian to his "old friend" (régi barátja) Ferencnell Garay, and dated 1909. Pp 317, with frontispiece and seven plates. A novel by Adriaan Schade van Westrum, based on Molnár's play. Enormously popular in his native Hungary, Molnár's plays were widely translated, produced, and adapted in the United States. Debuting in Budapest, THE DEVIL was presented in the United States on August 18, 1908 in two simultaneous productions, one at the Belasco Theatre starring George Arliss in his first major role, the other at the Garden Theater with Edwin Stevens (and Theda Bara in her debut). The Belasco Theater production is the source of the images in this volume. Three different companies filmed versions of THE DEVIL that same year, including Thomas A. Edison and D. W. Griffith. Another film version was produced in 1915 by Reginald Barker and Thomas H. Ince. A Hungarian version directed by Michael Curtiz was produced in 1918, with Arliss reprising his role for his cinematic debut. Arliss repeated the performance a third time for 1921 American film version directed by James Young and featuring (in an uncredited role) Fredric March in his film debut film. A private man despite his fame, Molnár seldom made public appearances, and books inscribed by him are rare, American publications from this period especially so. Bookseller Inventory # 15659
