First editions, Octavo text, 2,438 pp. plus 62 text figures (sketch maps), 42 plates, and 1 color folding map, and octavo portfolio atlas containing 52 (of 54), unbound, large, and beautifully colored, folding soil maps (on 52 sheets) of important agricultural counties, areas, and municipalities in various states (see below). Dane County, Wisconsin, and Muskogee, Oklahoma, map and text missing. Text and atlas in original maroon cloth with gold spine titles. USDA annual reports later than 1907 tend to be very scarce. *** Condition: Lacks Dane County, Wisconsin, and Muskogee, Oklahoma, maps and reports. Both volumes are ex-library with usual stamps and markings, although no stamps on recto of maps. Minor rubbing to covers and light wear to edges and corners. Text binding split where report has been removed. Atlas volume string ties intact, a couple hinges have short splits. All pages, plates, and atlas maps are generally very clean. A couple maps have edge tears. *** An extensive, well-illustrated treatment of soil type and distribution, land-use, agricultural conditions, farming practices, climate, physiology and geology, etc. for selected prominent localities; these volumes form part of the first graphic and systematic study of our nation's greatest natural asset. In addition to showing soil types and distribution, the maps also show cities and towns, roads, railroads, and other cultural features, plus hydrography and topography, all as they existed almost 100 years ago. Each report contains information about the history of settlement and agricultural development, farming practices, crops, land prices (incredibly low!), etc. Includes counties and areas of the following States: New York (Oneida); New Jersey (Freehold); Virginia (Henrico); North Carolina (Forsyth, Randolph); South Carolina (Bamberg, Orangeburg, Union); Georgia (Gordon, Habersham, Jeff Davis, Jones, Miller, Stewart, Talbot); Florida (Bradford, Indian River, Pinellas); Alabama (Bullock, Cleburne, Escambia, Russell); Mississippi (Jones, Wilkinson); Texas (Jefferson, Washington, South-Central); Arkansas (Ashley, Pope); Tennessee (Jackson); West Virginia (Boone, Logan and Mingo); Ohio (Stark); Indiana (Delaware, Hendricks); Wisconsin (Buffalo, Northeastern); Minnesota (Goodhue); Iowa (Bremer); Missouri (Greene, Nodaway, Perry, Ralls); Kansas (Montgomery); Nebraska (Cass, Douglas, Saunders, Scotts Bluff); Utah (Cache Valley); Washington (Stevens); and California (Sacramento Valley).
