Rcollta d'opuscoli scientifici, e filologici, Tomo IV. - 1730, (2), pp.39-131, feine Broschur. First Edition, first issue of "The first history of spectacles".Domenico Maria (1690-1788) gave credit for the invention to the Florentine Armati (fl. 1300)." This preprint of the history of glasses, which until now has apparently been overlooked by all well-known historians of glasses, must date back the alleged first edition by 8 years. "In the first section the author discusses the use of spectacles in antiquity, and concludes that the were unknown to the ancients. He deals in the second part with various kinds of lenses-concave, plano, and convex, and their use in magnifying objects, etc. The special interest of this work is Manni's opinion on the invention of spectacles. In the introduction he expresses his pride as a Florentine citizen and says that, in addition to all the other discoveries Florence has also the honour of the invention of spectacles. In Chapter 7 of the second part Manni quotes the statement of Leopoldo del Migliore that in the Church of St. Maria Maggiore, in Florence, there is a memorial to Salvino degli Armati as follows : - " Here lies Salvino d' Armato, of the family of Armati from Florence, the discoverer of spectacles. May God forgive him his sins. In the year of our Lord 1317 "."
