Born Trevor Dudley-Smith, he eventually changed his name to Elleston Trevor. Trevor worked in many genres, but is principally remembered for his 1964 adventure story The Flight of the Phoenix, written as Elleston Trevor, and for a series of Cold War thrillers featuring the British secret agent Quiller, written under the pseudonym Adam Hall. In all, Trevor wrote over 100 books. (from Wikipedia). Old Stripe, a badger, is the leader of a group of deep woodland creatures, and his ample mansion serves as a meeting and feasting place. His workroom is fronted by Otter, the potter, who moulds the jars to hold the 'baccy for others, as Old Stripe fashions briar pipes. The woodland feeling and the charming animals make a wonderful beginning for this book,., it is a pleasant book for younger children in this age level (Kirkus). The Woodlander Series are classic children's stories written in the 1940s and 1950s about the inhabitants of Deep Wood -- Old Stripe the Badger, Potter-the-Otter, Woo Owl and Digger Mole. This is the first book in the Deep Wood series. "I can't help but feel that this is the sort of thing Tolkien would have written about hobbits if he hadn't been forced to send them to Mordor - eating, talking about eating, eating again, smoking, making things, sleeping, socialising, messing about in boats (GoodReads).
