About this Item
Full page illustration from Punch Magazine, marking Canberra's inaugural as the new capital of Australia. It shows a lovely debutante descending a flight of stairs, fan in hand and tiara emblazoned "Canberra", behind her a kangaroo in a tuxedo, announcing her debut in society. With the caption [With Mr. Punch's compliments to Australia on the Inauguration of her new Capital by the Duke and Duchess of York.] Canberra's inaugural as the new capital came after a long period of debate between rivals Sydney and Melbourne; the site was first selected in 1908, but not confirmed until 1927.
