About this Item
New York: Covici-Friede, 1938. 8vo, unpaginated, bound in publisher's tan and dark brown cloth. First edition of this landmark work of photojournalism. Capa's photographs, which comprise a harrowing record of the Spanish Civil War, is dedicated to his lover Gerda Taro, who would later die in the conflict. The jacket shot (Death of a Loyalist Soldier) would cement Capa's reputation as one of the 20th century's great war photographers. This is a sound copy. Heavy staining from binder's glue along front and rear spine joint; fpep stained, with heavy discoloration to outer third of rear board, otherwise clean and bright and free of inscriptions, bookplates or stamps. Jacket is G+ only, with closed tear to upper front panel, heavy chafing along front and rear spine joints, with bottom 1" of spine missing, heavy wear and chipping to lower rear jacket panel, which is also scratched. Virtually the entirety of the front spine joint is split and has been repaired with archival tape, as has the closed tear on upper front panel and rear spine joint. Original price of $2.50 intact, and in all, a presentable copy of a landmark work in the scarce and fragile jacket. Seller Inventory # ABE-1691444798458
