Dana's brother was Donald Chandler Swan, and his sister was Ruth Swan Anderson. Dana married Rowena Otta (b. 1933), the daughter of Ernest Ignatz Otta and Sara Lena Wimpelberg. Rowena was born in Elgin, Illinois. She married Dana in Elgin, in 1933. Their only child, Chandler Otta Swan, married Pamela West, and has two sons. They lived mainly in California, until 1955 when their families returned to Elgin, Illinois. Early Swan ancestors first settled in Rowley and Boston, Massachusetts, while other immigrant ancestors also settled in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York in the 1600's. In the 1700-1800's, some migrated into Canada, and into Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Vermont. Later families lived mainly in Illinois, and others lived in England, in Germany, and in Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Utah, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Allied family lines are traced from three to twelve generations back to their countries of origin in Brittany, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Prussia, Saxony, Scotland, and Wales. The Swans and allied families had many interactions and relationships with various North American Indian tribes and their sachems (chiefs). In addition to Swan, other surnames which receive coverage include: Avery, Bradley, Chandler, Chesebrough, Clapp, Dana, Denison, Eastman, Gardiner, Hutchins, Minor, Stanford, Towne.
