Attractive full leather binding, with gilt titles to twin red and green labels, gilt lined compartments and gilt lined, diced calf leather boards. Marbled page edges and end papers, text block nice and tight, pages clean. Splitting to the front joint of Vol II, tender to the top and base of both spines, large volumes in generally good shape. Illustrated throughout in the text and with 51 numbered steel full page plates. Pagination: Vol I v-xiv, i-xliv, 1022pp with 24 steel plates; Vol II [ii], 1722pp with 26 steel plates. Provenance: bookplate for BW Horne, Hill s Road Cambridge. Approximately 10 inches tall (25cm) (nearly 3 inches thick). Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles to red and green labels, gilt lined raised bands, rubbed and worn, top of the spine tender to both volumes. Joints fair to good condition cracked to the front joint of Vol II, otherwise rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition gilt double filet to all the boards, minor marks and scratches. Page edges good condition top edges darkened, others marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges fair to good condition front hinge of Vol II cracked all the way through, otherwise sound and strong. Paste downs good condition marbled, bookplate. End papers good condition marbled, subsequently tanned and foxed. Title good condition tanned with minor foxing. Pages good condition tanned, good and tightly bound, some foxing.
