Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1948. Early Printing of the American Book Club Edition. Title page and copyright page have the same date (1948), and the copyright page bears the publisher's colophon, but lacks the "A" that would indicate a first printing. The rear board has a small black deboss in the bottom right corner. Fine- condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, soft white, tight, straight and square with deckled fore-edges and no marks or markings of any kind. The Binding is full light green cloth (color uniform throughout) with a red and black design on the front board, bright red and black title, etc., and design to the spine, unmarked white endpapers, and all corners square but showing light wear at the tips. No Dust Jacket. See photos. ix + 278 pages (including a word list at the end). 5 3/4" X 8 1/8". This tragic novel of apartheid in South Africa was twice made into movies - first, in 1951 with Canada Lee, Sidney Poitier, and Charles Carson, and again in 1995 with James Earl Jones and Richard Harris.
