First English edition translated by Edmund Stone and bound with the 1758 supplement which is paginated continously. Folio (34.5 x 23.5cm). 'The Traite gives a fairly complete list of instruments normally constructed during the first quarter of the eighteenth century.'- DSB. 'A very excellent & esteemed work.'- Lowndes. pp.viii,264;[4],265-325,[1]. With a total of 30 folding copper plates, 26 in the main section & 4 in the supplement. Four quires (16pp.) of text at the rear of the main work browned, as is common with this work & indicating the use of differing paper-stock. The first title with a few marks, some occasional unobtrusive light browing/foxing to a few plates & some text leaves, but a pleasant copy in contemporary full calf, neatly re-backed to style with label, gilt. The boards with a few light scuffs. Period engraved armorial bookplate of Jos.Townsend Esq. Vg.
