Fascinating work on wire cable construction of suspension bridges, with a detailed photographic study of 68 plates showing each step of construction of the Bear Mountain Bridge, which spans the Hudson River from Bear Mountain in the west bank to Anthony's Nose on the east. The bridge opened to traffic on November 26, 1924, and all the cable wire for the two main cables and the steel wire ropes for the foot bridges and suspenders were made by Roebling's. The 68 full page photographic plates show pier foundations under construction; excavation for anchorage pits; interior view of rock chamber for anchorage; tower nearing completion; foot bridge ropes ready to be towed across river; partial completion of foot bridges; reels of Roebling bridge wire at the ready; men adjusting the guide wires in order to spin the first set of strands; men spinning four strands; clamping of wires around anchorage shoes; compacting of strands in circular sections; views showing deflection of main cables; anatomy of one of the great supporting cables; rugged road construction cut into the side of "Anthony's Nose"; men in squeezing gangs at work atop the bridge; cables completed, with erection of superstructure under way; suspenders in place; etc. With text pertaining to the Bear Mountain Bridge's construction. Laid in is a TLS dated April 16, 1962 from a John Roebling's Sons Advertising Manager to A. C. Statter, concerning this volume. Name and monogram of Arthur C. Statter stamped on half-title. In addition, an old full-page clipping of a magazine cartoon of a collapsed suspension bridge is laid in. A handsome publication concerning the era's effort to traverse water and canyons with anchored supporting strands of cables. Some emphasis is placed on the Williamsburg Bridge. The photographic plates in this book record each step of construction , from the tower foundations to the completed bridge, of the Bear Mountain-Hudson River Bridge, opened in November 1924. All cable wire used in fabricating the two main cables, and the steel wire ropes used for foot bridges and suspenders, were furnished by the John A. Roebling's Sons Company. Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Quarto. Slightly oversized stiff wrappers, charcoal gray decorated in black and gilt, lettered in gilt. Some wear along edges. Photo plate 13/14 has a piece aprox 1/2" x 2 " missing from the bottom, otherwise interior clean. Many photographs taken during the construction of the Bear Mountain Hudson River Bridge. Roebling was the premier construction wire producer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; most famously, they were the engineers of the Brooklyn Bridge and were still leaders in the field when they provided the cable for the George Washington Bridge in 1931-32.
