Title: De la Connoissance des bons livres, ou ...
Publisher: Amsterdam: Henry et Theodore Boom
Publication Date: 1672
Edition: First Thus.
12mo. frontis + 472pp. Published first in Paris in 1671, this is the first edition of Sorel's influential work on French literature to be published outside of France. The four lengthy essays that comprise the sieur de Souvigny's volume constitute a rejection of the classical heroic romance in favor of naturalism and historicism: one might thus argue that Sorel is an aesthetic ancestor of Stendhal, Balzac, and Zola. Brunet, V: 458. Short tear to margin of title page, frontipiece lacking; else a very good copy in contemporary calf. Bookseller Inventory # 16963
